In a workshop held for teachers at the YPS Mohali, the Municipal Councillor Opinder Kaur Gill, who is also a woman rights activist, addressed the school staff on the Vishakha Guidelines - a set of procedural guidelines promulgated by the Supreme Court in 1997 for the cases of sexual harassment.
Teachers were told that sexual harassment need not involve physical contact. Any act that creates a hostile work environment - be it by virtue of cracking lewd jokes, verbal abuse and circulating lewd rumours - counts as sexual harassment. They were also told about te Internal Complaints Committee, with whom they could lodge a complaint.
In another workshop on POCSO Act, school counsellor Megha Sharma and a teacher from the junior wing of the school, Harpreet Kaur, talked about the Prevention of Children Sexual Offences Act. Tell-tale signs of children's behaviour which could be symptoms of a sexual offence committed against them were also discussed.
